Beer Bread

Have you ever wanted to make bread but thought it would take too long? Or was too complex with too many ingredients?

Well give this recipe a go!

Beer bread is so simple, quick and delicious. I first made this recipe back when I was at University living in College with many friends. From then onwards, I have made it for many gatherings, birthdays or when I pop home to visit Mum and Dad and it is always a big hit.

The basic recipe is below, but you can make so many variations to it. Often I have substituted white flour for wholemeal four. I have added seeds (sunflower, pumpkin and linseeds) to the mixture and sprinkled more on top while it cooks, I have tried other herbs mixed through as well as on top. Really you could make any modification you like so long as you keep the same quantity of wet and dry ingredients. I have used light beer most often, but also standard and heavy beer works to give it a stronger flavour.

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 can beer
  • 2 tbsp butter/olive oil
  • Rosemary
  • Sea salt/rock salt

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees
  2. Mix dry ingredients together, make a well and add the beer
  3. Pour into a greased loaf pan or cake tin (depending on the shape of loaf you would like)
  4. Bake for around 1 hour
  5. Remove from the pan and cool for 15 minutes

What is your favourite combination to make beer bread?

Enjoy xx
